Korean Cultural Center in Thailand Hosts 'Happy Chuseok with K-Vibe'
Spreading the Charm of Rich Holiday Culture and Korean Music
On September 24, the Korean Cultural Center in Thailand (KCC Thailand) hosted the "Happy Chuseok with K-Vibe" event at the Center, bringing together young Korean artists to celebrate Korean Thanksgiving, Chuseok. Organized as part of the "Touring K-Arts" project sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korean Foundation for International Cultural Exchange (KOFICE), the event offered cultural experiences such as Songpyeon (half-moon shaped rice cakes), Hanbok (traditional clothing), and traditional games. It also featured exciting performances by the brass band 'Golden Donut', the world music band 'GenaTango', and the traditional performing arts group 'Yesul In Gonggan'.
First, 50 pre-registered participants took part in a songpyeon workshop where they shaped the rice cakes to express gratitude for the year's harvest, then steamed them with pine needles in the traditional way before tasting them. Prior to the performance, the audience enjoyed trying on hanbok and playing traditional Korean games, which was followed by the main event: a special Chuseok concert.
Taking the stage, Golden Donut showcased the fresh appeal of Korean indie music by reinterpreting various genres, including brass, R&B, and indie. Under the theme "Eastern and Western Melodies Breathing with the Joy of Traditional Korean Performing Arts," GenaTango and Yesul In Gonggan drew massive applause for their collaborative performance. They layered spectacular spinning of Sangmo (a hat with feathers or paper streamers attached to the top) and dynamic Sajatal (lion mask) performances over music that combined jazz and tango rhythms.
Lee Sun-ju, Director of KCC Thailand, stated, "The Center has been hosting special events every year to celebrate Korea's biggest holidays, Chuseok and Seollal, together with the people of Thailand. Because Chuseok falls during the most abundant time of the year, it is a holiday with a highly developed culture of food and entertainment." She added, "As we joyfully celebrate with these talented artists who carry on the roots of the Korean culture loved worldwide today, I hope we can further expand the cultural connection between Korea and Thailand."
